Weather blues

As some of you have heard from the news, the weather in Sydney is crazy at the moment. Yep, flash flooding and storms... not a really good thing. It's been raining quite heavily for the past few days and last night, returning from work back home was quite scary... It's like I couldn't really see the car in front of me... It was pretty hazy and there was so much water on the roads, you couldn't see the lines. It was hailing too... and it wasn't that cold, but hail? Weird... Today is the same so hopefully I get to work okay.

Exam day on Tuesday

I actually got bitten by a spider on Tuesday, somewhere in uni. I definitely know it was uni because one of my friends said that the bite on my arm looked like a spider bite. It was! Well, I felt nauseous during the phonetics exam and actually had to go to the bathroom to puke in the middle of the exam. Felt fine after that and even after watching Jumper, but started feeling nauseous again and my arm was numb. It wasn't good. So I went to the doc and he gave me an antibiotics shot. He said it wasn't a really dangerous spider but yes, spider bites can do that to you.

Before Jumper, I also went to the docs to collect my vaccination results. Apparently I'm immuned for most of the vaccines, except the Hep B one. I'll need to get that next week.

Summer School Exams are over

Finally the exams are over, and summer school. Can't believe it's gone by so quickly. I don't really know how I've fared but just hoping that I can get in. If I don't, at least I tried... It was a really tough course too with a few barriers. I think I did okay, but who knows? Results are out by this Friday and just thinking about it makes my stomach churn.

I guess if I get in, that's really great and I could finish the course within 2 years if I go full-time, or 3 years if I go part-time and then full-time. I've asked the department and they said it shouldn't be a problem as long as I have clinical placements sorted out first hand. I guess I'll make a decision on Friday.

Productivity Week and Exam Nerves

The reasons why I haven't blogged are:
1) been working - worked a couple of days this week
2) been trying to study - studied on those days off, and it's been productive for the grammar exam on Monday. It's open book but I expect it to be tough and since I know I did quite badly for the Linguistics exam, I really need to get a high grade in this one. Just started on phonetics - the theory is not getting into my head, and I've been wasting trees trying to write sentence by sentence down repeatedly so I'll remember. If only there was such thing as a memory juice or some memory USB stick I can plug into myself.
3) been feeling quite nostalgic lately... and thinking of buying a phone card to call you guys. The thing is that because of work and tests every week at uni, I hadn't really had the time to social mingling...

Oh, my parents have left by the way. They're back in Melb with my sis... and my dad called me recently to say he left his wallet back in the hotel and needs me to pick it up. But I'll have to do that after the exam.

I did another productive thing this week which saves me time from having to do when sem 1 starts - which is, my car rego and driving licence. I have actually changed it to NSW. I have to say the colours are not as nice as the ones in Victoria. In fact, my car numberplate is bright yellow. It is the standard one and that is the cheapest, but it's not a bad number. You have to come down to see it... don't really wanna display my numberplate on my blog. Haha... As for my driving licence, yes, the Vic licence is so much nicer. I really like the green... but this yellow and white driving licence I have now... it's not that bad. I've got a decent photo too. =)

This week, I had most of my passes sorted out... from Ch 9 and SBS. It's pretty cool. I haven't actually worked at Ten yet but probably in the next next roster or something. Ch 9 and SBS are really down on people at the moment with one of the video c-a-p-t-i-o-n-i-n-g supervisors leaving for the same company up in the UK and another person leaving. In fact, they have asked me if I am interested to take up the position of video c-a-p-t-i-o-n-i-n-g supervisor over at SBS and have given me till March to decide. That is a major step because I would not only be doing c-a-p-t-i-o-n-i-n-g, but I will also be handling the feeds of the videos, liaising with the producers, cutting down and editing video stories... Plus I have a huge editing switchboard to myself. Pretty cool. I'll take a pic next time when I'm there. At the moment though I am going to be mainly at Ch 9 because I'll be training someone next week for about two weeks, showing him the ropes of the different types of software. Should be interesting.

Last week, I mentioned to the site manager at Nine that I might go part-time with my course, so that would take my studies to 4 years instead of 2. Well... it would be better in terms of allowing me to concentrate more on the study component. Looking at my sem 1 timetable, I have 5 subjects that run Mon to Thur full days. Then Fri to Sun, I'm working all days... which doesn't actually give me any off day really. And I kinda need one day off at least to study or have a social life. So I did think about it and it definitely more promising if I do it that way especially since I'm struggling right now. I was looking at Macquarie and they have only three days of uni and two hours less than us which I actually think is better... Oh well.. I have come across people who have said that the teaching for that course is not as good as in Syd Uni. Anyway, when I mentioned this to the site manager, apparently when he had a meeting with the big bosses here in Sydney, my name came up and this I heard from one of my colleagues... but they're kinda hoping that I go part-time and take that video supervising role at SBS and would certainly love for me to work more.

So I guess it's not a total loss if I do not pass. I am hoping to pass of course. But I guess if I don't, I'm gonna try to do a grad dip mid-sem and get into the MA the following year, maybe at Macquarie... but I'll do that once I know my results from summer school.

Well, can't wait for the exams to be over. I'll have to go for my doctor's appointment next week as well after the exams are over to find out what vaccinations I'll need to get.

Right now, I have to get down to business and try to memorise these phonetic rules - the big theory stuff for the Phonetics exam on Tues. Plus I have to master drawing up the faces too, to show the oral cavity and lips, teeth and stuff. I suck drawing those faces... If only I could trace a face out.

Signing off here... I'll be back after Tuesday to either complain or say how I went in the exams... And, of course, wish me luck and blessings for these two papers. Hopefully I get into the course.

Exam blues

I guess this is when you start to dread uni... Had my linguistics exam today and been studying really hard for it, but some gut feeling is telling me I haven't done well and that I totally flunked the Short Answer Questions. I was pretty upset about it because I had a mind blank and I actually knew a few of the answers... so I was probably more frustrated than upset.

Anyway, not gonna dwell anymore. Just gonna put it aside and concentrate on the next two papers coming up - Monday and Tuesday next week. Oh... I have a speech live test at work tomorrow too. Apparently my company had this crazy idea of going live with the 4:30pm news bulletin. That's really insane because I'll have to talk 15minutes straight with hardly a breath. *throat croaks*

My parents are here by the way, up in Sydney. They arrived today and cooked dinner plus a few other dishes for me and my housemate to eat the next few days. That was really nice of them because it's the exam period. Also, I am working three days next week before the exams and with all the meals to just heat-up and eat, it basically frees up more time on my calendar.

My parents also liked the place I'm staying at. They said although the outside is pretty dark, they said it's a nice area and it seems like the neighbours are really nice from what my housemate and I have told them. So yeah, it's all good. I was a little worried they won't really like it because they can be a little picky about security etc... but they really find it quite nice. Let me know if you guys ever head up.

Tomorrow is work and after work, it's back to study, study, study.

Love's in the Air...

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY to all non-lovebirds and lovebirds!

Didn't do much today.

Lucky M has her boyfriend with her and they're going to the Syd Aquarium... so jealous. But nah, it gives me a chance to sit down and try to study. I have to, because I have work on Saturday. Also, my parents are staying in a hotel near my place on Sunday and Monday and then moving to the city because my dad's company has paid for this hotel in the city from Tuesday and not sure how long they'll be around for.

Well this morning, I studied a little bit, just touching on linguistics as the exam's on Monday... Then I had to go to the docs to get my vaccination. There was actually an explosion at the Broadway Shopping Centre yesterday and there was a huge fire. No-one was hurt but all the electricity failed and the vaccines stored in the fridge were worn out, so the doc couldn't give me a vaccine today, instead he took a blood test - safer anyway he said, so he'll know if I really need a vaccine or not. I actually needed three blood tests, but with the technology nowadays, he only needed to take one needle and one big tube of blood from me and from that sample, he can conduct the three blood tests. That really relieved me. Imagine three needles and three big tubes... Surprisingly it didn't hurt, but it was definitely a huge tube. Unfortunately they don't do the TB testing at this medical centre because they don't have the equipment and I have to go to a special radiation clinic to get it. Well, results of my blood test will be out next week. If it's all positive, then I don't have to take any vaccines till my next check-up. But if it's negative, then I'll have to. The doc also said it's probably wise to do my shots after the exams just in case of any reactions.

Poor TY - he's sick today... But good thing because he didn't go to work. In fact I recall him saying a day or two ago that if he got sick then he didn't need to go to work. Hee.

Anyway, just another day of love which should be every other day I reckon. Marketers should be happy on this day. Today, saw these two guys in business suits at a flower shop discussing what types of flowers to get their loved one then at the newsagency where I was getting TY a card, there was a queue and a few guys were surrounding the V-Day card shelf and looking long and hard, and when I found my card and started leaving the newsagency, a lot of guys were still looking. Hee... I guess it always has to be the RIGHT card and a lot of cards I saw were quite dodgy.

So yeah, this was V-Day. Now back home and gonna cook dinner and then study.

Busy times ahead

I had a mock exam in phonetics today and did good - 20.5/30. The second one wasn't quite as good because I tuned out. IF ONLY the first mock exam was the real thing. But at least I'm kinda passing now compared to before when I was failing a lot of my tests. So yeah, I'm definitely pressing on. Gotta stay strong and focused and continue praying. Yes, prayers are definitely needed for me to pass summer school! I only have 2 weeks to go - Linguistics exam next week on the Mon and Phonetics and Grammar exams the week after on Mon and Tues respectively.

After the exams I am so gonna hang out with friends I've been meaning to call and would love to watch Jumpr as well. TY's sent me some TV shows and movies so I can't wait to finish my powerstudy for my exams and get onto it as soon as summer school's over. Got a live speech test for work coming up next week too... but not too worried about it although nerves get the better of me sometimes. So would definitely need prayers on that one too.

As for my first two shifts at SBS last week, it was so awesome! As a c-a-p-t-i-o-n-e-r there, you don't just do c-a-p-t-i-o-n-i-n-g, you also manage the videotapes and video editing stuff. Pretty cool. The building inside is really modern and a lot of open space that it looks like a gallery. Am definitely going to take photos next time. And I get an internal carpark too which is surprising because the rest of my colleagues didn't get one... the security guard must really like me to do that for me. Hee... Stay tune for SBS photos... I won't really takea picture of the outside of the building because it looks kinda crappy and you can't really see inside - well, it's all one-way, so you can see from the inside out onto the street but can't see what's inside the building from on the street itself - security reasons I'm guessing. And my SBS pass is pretty cool too. =)

This week, I'm going to the mechanics to get a full inspection on my car. It's the whole process of changing over your rego when you move interstate. Well, you have about 3 months to change your rego and it's been almost a month now.. but it seems like a long process and I don't want to wait too late because uni semester one would have officially started by then.

So yes, still busy you could say...

Year of the Rat and recent events...

Happy Chinese New Year all and happy bday to all rat babies!

I didn't really do anything much this CNY... Sydney had stormy weather again, my housemate went out to have a nice dinner with her aunt, my ex-housemate and now coursemate, M, went out with her cousin for dinner... but at least there was So You Think You Can Dance so I managed to watch that. The week after next I'd probably have to tape it because exams are around the corner.

Today I'm working at SBS! How exciting! Can't wait! It's an observing shift so I won't really be doing much... just need to know how to supervise over there because I'll be supervising some time.

Was doing phonemic transcription last night and I think I'm getting there. My errors are shifting around which is really annoying but apparently my lecturer said it's good that it's doing that. I just want to have one exercise error-free, and it's so tough. It is a real struggle... It's like another language whereby some people just get and some people like me don't get. Grrr!! I know I shouldn't think too negative but I have to really think what if I do not pass this you know... I have to think alternatives. I guess it isn't really a loss because it would be that I at least tried and gave it a go. And if it doesn't work out, I'll continue working in Sydney for a while - am sure the big bosses here would love for me to go full time! For now, I just have to keep working at phonetics or try to squeze in the time for it. Apparently I keep transcribing American-nish - that's what my lecturer said. It certainly doesn't help that the closest people that talk to me everyday are M, TY and my sis who all sound American-nish. And I did ask my lecturer, "Does that mean I'll probably do well in America?" And she said, "Yeah, probably." It's a really bias system I reckon because here we are in Australia meant to learn the Australian system - the IPA... and suppose if we wanted to go to America to work, it would be more of a struggle because we have to relearn the symbols compared to the Americans who already know those symbols... But having said that, they are thinking of revamping the system to make it more universal which is good I guess... Bad news though that they might change over to this new system sometime when semester one starts for me, so yeah, how frustrating...

All settled in...

Here's my new place (slightly messy perhaps, but I reckon it's a cosy little shack.. hee)

What a Day of Busy-ness

Woke up really early today and the movers who were supposed to get our boxes have not even come yet and it's now 5:24pm. I really hope they come soon! Rang them and apparently they were not booked in for the job but the website said they were. Strange...

Anyway, it was a crazy and weird day today - mainly the weather got stormy and it was rather gloomy... but I think I did a lot of productive things like arrange my car inspection to change over to NSW rego and plates, did one tape exercise of phonetics and also changed my addresses with Honda Insurance and Honda Service. I also fixed up my fax machine, got TY to send me a test fax and it works now! Yay!

Still waiting on the movers... grrr...

Monday 4 February 2008

A good day

Today's been a good day - first of all, complain-free!! Yeah, it's been all really good. A few compromises, so I think I can live with that.

There were two bad things that happened today though:

1) The lecturer for the phonetics class didn't turn up at all. Class started at 9am and no-one really told us she was sick till 10am. Apparently the department just got her voice message at 9:45am. We created a class attendance list anyway... but I think all of us were pretty disappointed she didn't show up. Plus we had to wake extra early to get there. So at about 10 something, I left with a classmate to go to Bunnings. It was there that I bought this cooler/heater. The reason for my splurge - at the moment we only have one fan in the house and nothing else. And I think when TY comes over, he'd really want to be cool, so yeah, it's a good system. Unfortunately they didn't sell just coolers - all the coolers came with heaters. But I got it for only $99 and it's such a smart little thing. It looks like this:

2) It was raining pretty heavily. In fact, the whole day today and yesterday, it was half a day. Apparently it'll be like that the entire week... And today was cold.

The good stuff:
It was rather productive today I thought - housewise. I bought a "Y" piece from this place which specialises in plumbing. The customer service is excellent, so I'd definitely recommend it - the place is called Tradelink. They have a website too - here and am sure there is a store in Melb too. Oh yes, the Y piece - it's meant for my washing machine to connect two hoses to a tap for the cold water to run through it. We kinda struggled with it, but our neighbour had a spanner and managed to help us with it. She was really helpful.

At night, we cooked and relaxed by watching So You Think You Can Dance Australia. How good was Melbourne? Apparently my friend's friend is in the top 20. Her name's Vanessa, so look out for her I guess...

Got to go sleep now. I have to wake up at 7am tomorrow to have breakfast and leave for class. I am hoping my lecturer will be sick again, because if so, I can catch up and practice on my own more with phonetics.

CNY is coming up and VDay too... sadly TY isn't able to head up, because his bro will be heading back to Melb around that time. As for CNY, my parents are heading up here on Wed for about a week (I think) to come visit me. Hopefully I won't be too busy. I am working this weekend - Fri, Sat and Sun... and classes are Mon, Tue, Wed...

Sunday 3 February 2008

Life at my new place...

Last night, I unpacked all my boxes and so the place looks really lived in now. The only thing that is not done up properly is my bed. In fact, L, a friend and ex-housemate of TY's is now living in Sydney and coming over later in the afternoon to help fix that up. So from tomorrow onwards, all you guys can start visiting! (we have a very comfy sofa bed. In fact, you don't need to bring pillows, linen... etc... we have it all)

Been settling down ok I guess. Work has been great - kinda missed it. Met a few familiar faces and also met quite a few fresh/new faces too. Am gonna be starting work at SBS next week - how exciting!

Home-wise - not too good... In fact, I prefer work compared to study and being at home. I think there are some housing issues with my current housemate C. I honestly did not expect this turnout. I guess it's because she's never lived with anyone else apart from her immediate family. Well, here's the thing - every day, it seems that I have something to complain about with what she does, and I really hate complaining (I don't even have to think of complaining because it's right in front of your face and it's mere commonsense you do not do that). What am I talking about? C'll move my stuff around the house - she'd put my contact lens case in the cupboard when it's still wet and shut the door - commonsense is that when it's wet and in an area that is enclosed, the item will start to smell even though it's just water. The second thing is mere consideration. I was sleeping and turned the fan on because it was hot, but I still like to cover myself with the blanket (just for security). Then she turned the fan off assuming I probably don't need it anymore. But when she did, I immediately got up and turned it back on. I told her that I turned on the fan to circulate the air and because it gets a little warm, but I still like to be covered with a blanket, and she was like "okay..." It's not like I won't turn it off when I get up... unless she was cold, but it was bizarre, because she was gonna go out at that time. I also told her about the contact lens case yesterday and she wasn't too happy. You could see it on her face. In fact, I think all the things she does involves consideration, respect and commonsense. The other thing is that today she went out with L and K to play golf. I remembered mentioning that I will have to do my phonetics assignment today, but she should still have asked if I wanted to go right? I wasn't too upset about that because it might be their little thing, so that's fine... but then she'd message me later saying that she's going to have lunch at Rhodes shopping centre (about 5 mins drive from our place) with them. And she didn't bother asking "Have you have lunch? Wanna join us?" OR "Do you want me to buy back something?" Last time when I was with M, my temp accomm housemate, we thought of her and asked if she needed food... so it was just a little bit of consideration. Also, there was this plastic cupboard I had that I didn't want and I asked if she wanted it... She said she'll give it a try. But then when she didn't want it, she just moved it to my room. I mean, she should at least ask me first before putting it in my room right? Sigh... Anyway, I never really expected all of this. So yeah, I've been pretty upset about it and frustrated, and I fear that if I am complaining about these little commonsensical things she should know about every single day, it would make a huge rift between us - and it's slowly growing... Like I said, I confronted her about the things I mentioned, and she definitely didn't like it. The thing is that after I confronted her, the next day, something else upsets me, so I don't really know how long I can put up with this. It's only been about a month. The good side is she is really handy and helpful around the house. She'd help me fix up my cupboards, shelves, wash the dishes, etc... which I truly appreciate. But yeah, perhaps next year, she can go on staying with L and K if they don't mind her "managing ways" around the house... and I'll go stay with M, my temp accomm (because by then, M will have to leave as her contract at the temp acomm is only for a year). And M and I have lived together and we have lived with various people before (I think boarding school certainly helps you with learning to respect and show consideration towards one another...) Perhaps L and K don't mind because they probably don't share a common bathroom and C doesn't need to buy groceries or fix up stuff and they don't really share or use the same stuff...

I recall passing C my blog address so if she reads this, it may be better. Then she'll know my heart and how I truly feel about us living together. I don't think she's been reading my blog... but it might be good I guess if she does? I have to say, it is very different living with your immediate family than living with someone else, and I guess she'll have to change or adjust her living methods and understand what is pure commonsense about staying with someone who's not family and learn to live like she's actually away from home.
